Mason won a playoff Sunday against Parker McLachlin with a birdie after forcing sudden death on No. 18 at Mauna Lani Resort, pocketing his third Hawaii State Open and a $10,000 prize.
Mason, a former UH-Hilo golfer who hails from Oahu, trailed McLachlin by a stroke entering the final round, but he quickly caught fire with six birdies on the front nine. He finished with a 7-under 65 to get to 13-under after three rounds.
Mason’s other titles came in 2008 at Hawaii Prince in Honolulu and in 2013 when he beat Dean Wilson in a playoff at Mauna Lani.
Wilson, the 2014 champion, finished sixth at 7-under.
Mason is also a five-time champion of the Hilo Invitational, winning the last time the tournament was held in 2014.
In the senior open, Jeff Coston – a 60-year-old who played on the Champions Tour last season – closed with a 68 to edge Dave Eichelberger by a stroke. Coston claimed the $5,000 prize at Mauna Lani for the second time. Hilo’s Clayton Amuro was the low amateur.
Waiakea graduate Britney Yada captured the women’s title with a comfortable five-shot victory. At 7-under, she earned an $800 payday.
